How to write a nursing assistant (CNA) resume that clears the HR screen

Hospitals, nursing homes and home-health agencies screen CNA resumes on the non-negotiables first: an active state certification, a clean registry status, and hands-on patient care. Only after that do they look at whether you can run a shift without constant supervision. Your resume has to answer both layers in that order: credentials first, competencies second.

What HR checks on a CNA resume

• Active certification and registry status. State, certification number or verification, expiration date. If it needs renewal, renew before applying — an expired CNA is an automatic reject.
• Procedures you can perform. Vital signs, ADLs (bathing, feeding, toileting), transfers and mobility, glucose checks, catheter care, charting. Be specific: the charge nurse knows which tasks need supervision.
• Care settings you have worked in. Med-surg, long-term care, memory care, rehab, home health, hospice. Each has a different pace and patient profile.
• Documentation and systems. Charting, flow sheets, EHR systems (Epic, PointClickCare, Cerner). Accurate documentation prevents medication errors and legal exposure.
• Shift availability. Nights, weekends, rotating. It is the reality of the field and stating it moves you up.

Mistakes that get a CNA resume rejected

• Leaving out certification details. It is the first thing verified. Without state, number and expiration, the resume goes to the bottom of the pile or out.
• Writing "patient care" with no detail. It is the same as writing "worked". List the procedures and patient type: "post-surgical care for older adults on a 30-bed unit".
• Claiming duties outside your scope. A CNA who lists RN or LPN tasks triggers immediate distrust. Be precise about what your certification allows.
• Omitting clinical hours. For new graduates, clinical rotations are the experience. List facility, unit and hours.
• Typos. You will write notes that nurses and doctors act on. A resume with errors signals your charting will have them too.

If you just earned your certification and have no work history

Your clinical hours are your experience — treat them that way: facility, unit, hours completed, procedures performed under supervision. Volunteer work in a hospital or nursing home, caregiving for a family member that involved real procedures, or any job in a care setting all count. Add short certifications that carry real weight: BLS/CPR, first aid, dementia care training. Put your CNA certification in the first section even if it is weeks old.
