Why your resume never reached a recruiter

If you have sent dozens of applications without a reply, the problem is often not your experience. Most mid-size and large employers use an ATS (Applicant Tracking System), software that receives resumes, extracts the information and ranks candidates before any person opens a file. If the system cannot read your resume correctly, your application sinks regardless of how well you fit the role.

What the score measures

• Format readability. Whether columns, tables, headers or graphics prevent the system from extracting text in the right order.

• Industry keywords. Whether you use the terms that appear in postings for your field, which is what the filter searches for.
• Missing information. Contact details, incomplete dates, absent sections that raise questions for the human reviewer.
• Achievement writing. Whether you describe duties or results. That is what decides the interview once a person reads you.

The formatting mistakes that break parsing most often

• Two-column layouts. Many systems read left to right without recognizing columns, producing scrambled, meaningless text.
• Contact details in the header or footer. It is where many people put their phone and email, and it is exactly what several systems ignore entirely.
• Tables to organize experience. They look tidy to you and extract out of order for the system.
• Text inside images or graphics. A resume sent as an image has no text to extract: the score is zero.
• Unusual fonts or decorative icons. They can become unreadable characters when the text is extracted.
• Creative section names. "My journey" instead of "Work Experience" can prevent the section from being identified.
• Inconsistent date formats. Mixing "2023–2025", "March 2023" and "03/23" complicates the calculation of your tenure.

What to do with your result

A low score almost never means your experience is insufficient. It usually means it is poorly presented. Start with the formatting issues: they take minutes to fix and carry the largest impact. Then match your keywords to the specific posting you are applying to, because the same resume performs differently by role. Finally, rewrite duties as results — that part is not evaluated by the system but by the person deciding whether to call you.

What no tool can promise you

This is worth stating plainly: no tool can guarantee a resume will pass every ATS. Each employer configures theirs with its own criteria, and some do not use one at all. What can be done is removing the known technical obstacles, using your industry's vocabulary, and presenting your experience so a human wants to read it. Any service promising a guaranteed pass rate is selling something it cannot deliver.
