How to write an agronomist resume that proves field work, not just theory
Agronomy is practiced in the field, and employers know it: they want someone who has walked plots, diagnosed pests on site, and made decisions with a crop at risk. A resume listing coursework and conferences without naming crops managed or acres covered reads like a new graduate's, regardless of years.
What the farm manager or agribusiness looks for
Crops and acreage. Which crops you managed and how many acres. Corn, soybeans, specialty vegetables, orchards, vineyards: each has different management, cycle and pest pressure.
Area of practice. Production management, crop consulting, input sales, plant pathology, irrigation, postharvest, research. Distinct profiles.
Integrated pest management. Field scouting, action thresholds, biological and chemical control, resistance management. The most valued technical competency.
Production results. Yield per acre, loss reduction, quality improvement, input cost per acre. An improved metric is your strongest argument.
Certifications and licensing. Certified Crop Adviser (CCA), pesticide applicator license, GAP certification, state licensing. With dates.
Mistakes that get an agronomist resume rejected
Not specifying crops. "Agricultural consulting" says nothing. Managing corn and managing orchards are not comparable.
Omitting acreage. Advising 50 acres and managing 5,000 are incomparable responsibilities.
A purely academic resume. Listing courses, seminars and conferences without field experience is the sector's most common error.
