How to write a pharmacy technician resume that proves accuracy
In a pharmacy, one dispensing error can hurt someone. That is why the pharmacist-in-charge hiring is not looking for another retail associate. They want someone meticulous, who understands a medication is not an ordinary product, and who knows when to ask instead of guessing. Your resume has to communicate precision and judgment before friendliness.
What the pharmacist-in-charge checks
Certification and license status. PTCB (CPhT) or ExCPT certification, state registration or license, expiration dates. First section — it is the first thing verified and many states require it.
Medication knowledge. Brand and generic names, dosage forms, routes, look-alike/sound-alike drugs, cold chain. You are not a pharmacist, but the vocabulary must be second nature.
Prescription and controlled substances handling. Data entry accuracy, insurance adjudication, DEA schedules, perpetual inventory for CII. It is the legal core of the job.
Inventory and expiration control. Expiration date checks, FEFO rotation, cycle counts, ordering, recalls. A tech who controls expirations prevents real losses.
Customer service with clear limits. Counseling belongs to the pharmacist. Knowing when to escalate is a competency, not a limitation.
Mistakes that get a pharmacy technician resume rejected
Presenting yourself as retail staff. "Customer service and sales" files you as a store clerk. Write about prescription intake, data entry accuracy, inventory and insurance claims.
Leaving out certification. Without CPhT or state registration visible, the recruiter assumes you are not eligible. Put it at the top with expiration.
Not mentioning controlled substances experience. If you handled CII inventory or DEA logs, that is a serious trust credential. Many leave it out as routine.
Implying you counseled patients. Writing "advised patients on treatment" is a legal red flag. Use "provided information under pharmacist supervision".
Typos. You read and transcribe drug names daily. A resume with errors suggests you will confuse look-alike names.
Keywords pharmacy ATS filters look for
Use them only where they are true for you: the filter searches for them, but the recruiter verifies them in the interview.

If you are seeking your first pharmacy job
Start with certification: PTCB's CPhT is the most widely recognized and many employers require it or will hire you as a trainee while you earn it. Check your state's registration rules and note your status. Then reframe any experience with cash handling, inventory or customer service in pharmacy language. If you are studying nursing, biology or a health field, mention it — it shows scientific grounding. Highlight the two traits the pharmacist values most: attention to detail and willingness to ask when unsure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a pharmacy technician resume with no experience?
Lead with PTCB certification or trainee status and your state registration. Then reframe cash-handling, inventory or customer service work in pharmacy terms, and emphasize accuracy and willingness to verify.
Is PTCB certification required?
It depends on the state, but most employers require or strongly prefer it. If you are studying for it, write "CPhT candidate — exam scheduled [month/year]".
Should I mention controlled substances experience?
Yes, if accurate. Handling CII inventory or DEA documentation is a significant trust credential. State the scope without overstating it.
Can I say I counseled patients?
No. Counseling is the pharmacist's role. Write "provided medication information under pharmacist supervision" instead.
How long should the resume be?
One page. Certification and state registration at the top, then experience with concrete pharmacy processes and volume.
